Penal substitution is the anchor for other truths about the atonement, whether we are talking about Christus Victor, Christ as an example, or the healing that comes in the atonement. Penal substitution means that Christ died in the place of sinners, taking upon himself the penalty and punishment they deserved. So, penal substitution is the act of a person taking the punishment for someone else’s offenses. In Christian theology, Jesus Christ is the Substitute, and the punishment He took (at the cross) was ours, based on our sin (1 Peter 2:24). For all the bluster that penal substitution is a late arrival to the party of atonement theory, I was surprised to read ancient writers offering plain expositions of it. And there were none of the distortions and childish lisping I’d been told to expect from exponents of this theology. This is what’s usually called the “Penal Substitution” view of the atonement, for it emphasizes that Jesus was punished by God in our place.
